87-Day Report
Bulls are starting to hit another gear by this stage of the test. Overall average daily gain has picked up by almost 0.5 lbs per head per day compared to last month! Leading the way in gain in the Angus division is bull 20-4 from Schmitt Angus out of Lewis, Colorado. This is a bull to watch as he is averaging 5.25 lbs per day! A close 2nd is from B4L Angus from Muleshoe, TX. Bull number 4-5 is out of LD Emblazon 999. In the Braunvieh division J Bar Braunvieh has brought a nice set of 7 bulls. Leading the way is test number 7-3; gaining 3.46 lbs per day. The feed efficiencies on this set of bulls so far has also been above average, with a conversion rate of 5.68 lbs of feed per 1 lb of gain. In the Charolais division, Grau Charolais has brought a nice uniform set of bulls this year. Bull 5-1 continues to lead his division in gain (3.34 ADG), WDA (3.32) AND efficiency (6.47 F:G). In the Hereford division there are 7 bulls offered by the Abercrombie and Cornerstone Ranches. We have a change in rank this go around, with Cornerstone Ranch's 2-3 bull leading in gain; gaining 3.62 per day. This rate of gain has allowed this NJW 6Z R117 BIG RIB 22D son to continue to hold the top spot in WDA as well; 3.37. Finally, the Red Angus division is owned by TL Cattle out of Grady, NM. These bulls will add great hybrid vigor, uniformity, and efficiency to your herd; averaging a -1.67 RFI. This will mean these bulls will remain productive on less inputs. Keep an eye on the performance of these calves, as their rate of gain as a whole has picked up by close to .75 lbs per head per day!
Our efficiency test is only half over, but there are some current leaders to watch. Sanchez Angus (Belen, NM) owns bull 18-1. Sired out of Miller Eagle Eye 410, this bull is converting an outstanding 4.54 lbs feed to 1 lb gain! He also has the best RFI value (-3.82) of the 74 bulls that have been efficiency tested thus far. Not far behind is bull 10-5; another Angus bull owned by Lust Angus (Abernathy, TX). Out of Barstow Cash, this bull is converting 5.05 lbs per lb of gain with an RFI of -1.14.
60-Day Report
The first 60 days, the test station experienced much needed moisture in the form of snow and rain. Bulls have performed well given the conditions. The group as a whole is gaining well at 3.13 pounds per head per day. Leading the way in gain in the Angus division is bull 20-4 from Schmitt Angus out of Lewis, Colorado. This is a bull to watch as he is averaging 4.99 lbs per day! A close 2nd is from J-C Angus. Bull number 9-3 is out of 3F EPIC 4631. All of the bulls out of this sire group are gaining well. In the Braunvieh division J Bar Braunvieh has brought a nice set of 7 bulls. Leading the way is test number 7-3; gaining 3.83 lbs per day! The feed efficiencies on this set of bulls so far has also been above average, with a conversion rate of 5.68 lbs of feed per 1 lb of gain.
